Adult and Individual Counseling in Titusville and Surrounding Areas

No matter what storms you are facing, we are here to guide you through.

Who at MCC treats adults? (18+)

Though we often like to think of adults as independent, there are times when the world grows too much to bear. Maybe it is years of untreated depression. Perhaps a recent loss or trauma has shaken you to your core. Regardless of why you need help, rest assured our therapists can guide you towards a happier, healthier future. For more information on the psychotherapeutic services we offer to adults in Titusville, read on.

While we do offer other therapies—including EMDR—our practice mostly focuses on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Research shows that CBT alone can overcome depression and anxiety in 50-75% of patients after 5 to 15 sessions. But how can simply talking be as effective as some medications? This technique is based on the following principles:

  1. Unhelpful ways of thinking lead to unhealthy emotional and behavioral reactions

  2. Deeply held beliefs can be examined and reprogrammed to improve responses to challenging situations

  3. Those suffering from psychological problems can learn more positive coping methods that improve their lives

  4. Individuals can take charge of their own mental health through education, internal exploration, and support to install healthier patterns

  5. A focus on moving forward is essential to proper coping (Hope!)

CBT treatment is a way of deprogramming old beliefs and building new ones in their place. To do so, your counselor will help you gain insight into troublesome situations and recognize signs of unhelpful or distorted thinking. The counselor will collaborate with you to identify problem-solving strategies and finding new ways to respond. For times when behavioral patterns are causing issues, your therapist will likely utilize calming strategies to enhance relaxation and roleplaying to prepare you for distress.

(Note: that not all patients require all techniques and the proper mixture of treatment options is something decided by the patient and his or her counselor.)

How to know when it is time for counseling

Adults can often feel reluctant to see a therapist. This is driven—in part—by the stereotypes and stigmas of counseling painted by the media. Afraid that they’ll be judged or scorned, many people try to deal with mental health problems on their own. This can lead to substance abuse problems and worsen existing psychological issues. We advise giving us a call when you:

  1. Struggle to Control Your Emotions: While we all feel angry, sad, or anxious, you need to pay attention to the degree to which you experience these emotions. If you find yourself snapping at people excessively, punching the wall, yelling frequently at your children, fighting with your boss often, or cutting people from your life consistently, you might want to reach out to a mental health professional. If not, these emotional outbursts can lead to job loss and relationship loss.

  2. Cannot Keep Relationships: Sudden changes in mental health can impact your behavior. Some people pull away from loved ones and turn their thoughts inward. The thought of burdening others further amplifies this tendency to withdraw. Others begin to press intensely into their significant other as their only source of comfort, which can develop codependency. Both habits erode relationships and lead to increased feelings of isolation.

  3. Are Overwhelmed By Feelings of Grief: Overcoming the loss of a loved one or long-standing relationship is difficult. For those who have no one to share their emotions with, the burden can grow too much to bear. Grief counseling gives you a safe place to lay your sadness and helps you to work through the sometimes crippling effects of loss. “You cannot heal what you cannot feel.”

  4. Notice a drop in Workplace or School Performance: When your report card suddenly goes from straight As to Fs, it can be a sign of a mental health problem. Disorders like depression and anxiety can sap your energy, cripple your attention span, and drain enjoyment from your work. While you may skate by in this state for some time, it is likely to catch up with you one day.

  5. Recognize a Need For Self-Improvement: Not all people seek counseling for reactive reasons. Some people view it as a way to become their best self. A trained counselor can point out your negative habits and help you build newer, healthier approaches to situations.

  6. Experience a Change in Appetite or Sleep Patterns: Before these feelings started, you slept like a rock. Nowadays, you wake up at a pin drop. Or, perhaps, the idea of eating now revolts you. Sudden changes in sleep and eating patterns can be symptoms of mental health issues. People who are depressed, grieving, or stuck in an anxious state might struggle to stay awake. People who are stressed often skip meals or feel totally disinterested in eating. As too much or too little food or sleep is bad for health, it’s a good idea to discuss these problems with a licensed therapist to uncover their proximate cause.

  7. Have Experienced Trauma: People with a history of trauma—including domestic or sexual abuse—can usually benefit from talking with a counselor at our Titusville counseling center. This is true even in cases where one believes they have mostly overcome a past event. These sessions can grant you a new perspective on your past experiences and help you learn new ways to cope.

  8. Do Not Enjoy Things You Once Did: People dealing with emotional or psychological issues often lose interest in things they once loved. The bookworm might struggle to open a book, or the usual favorite activities might leave you feeling just as uninspired as before. If not nipped in the bud, this disinterest can lead to feelings of emptiness and a general disconnect from the people around you.

Services our counselors provide

Life Changes There are times when the rollercoaster we call life does more loop-de-loops than we can handle. Personality Disorders There are 10 common personality disorders: OCD, borderline, avoidant, paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal, antisocial, and narcissistic. While counseling cannot provide the same impact as medication from a psychiatrist, we can help you better deal with the results of these disorders.
PTSD Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health issue that results from witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event. While best known for its flashbacks, this condition has 16 other symptoms. EMDR therapy—which is offered by Mary Carr—can help you process your trauma more healthily.
Eating Disorders Many people’s knowledge of eating disorders is limited to what they’ve seen in high school lectures. But these short videos often fail to capture the seriousness of things like anorexia and bulimia (the former of which has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder). Call us to schedule a consultation and have one of our counselors help you work through the body image issues that sit at the root of many eating disorders.
Trauma Car accidents. Murder. Sexual assault. Terminal illness. These things are traumatizing and difficult for any adult to deal with. Individual Counseling FAQs

Why Should I Choose Miracle City Counseling for therapy in the Titusville area?

We opened this clinic because of a dearth of mental health services in our area. Our passion for and dedication to our craft has allowed us to grow into the largest counseling center in Titusville. With six different counselors on-site, we have something to offer those at every stage of the life cycle. We also do everything we can to be accessible to both children and working adults. This includes providing comprehensive telehealth services and partnering with a wide array of insurance providers. Every day we come to work aiming to provide you and your neighbors with the mental health services you deserve.

I’m Nervous About Starting Therapy. Is that weird?

Not at all. The thought of sharing your inner self with a stranger can be intimidating. Though you’re not obligated to, we encourage you to bring up these feelings during your first session. This feeling of anxiety often ebbs as you get to know your therapist and begin to see the results of their work. If you still feel uncomfortable after three or four sessions, it’s vital that you discuss them. These feelings of anxiety can impede CBD and make it difficult to hold a proper dialogue.

Will I Feel Better Right Away? // How Long Will I Be In Therapy?

Studies find that the average psychotherapy client takes around 3 months to see an improvement. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t that clear-cut. How long you need to be in therapy will depend upon a myriad of factors including your condition, your openness to the process, and your treatment plan. Our clients with depression, for instance, tend to see results after one or two months. Treating anxiety, meanwhile, often takes four or more. Some people—flooded with relief at finally treating a long-standing issue--start feeling better after their first session, The majority of people, however, can expect a process of six months, or more they’re looking to overcome deep-seated difficulties.

What Happens If You Think I Need Medication?

While we possess a deep understanding of mental health disorders, we cannot prescribe medications. If we think that’s a necessary component of your treatment plan, we’ll refer you to a psychiatrist. If we believe that physical issues may be at the root of a problem, we may also refer you to your primary physician. Like with any other treatment, whether or not you visit the professionals we recommend is up to you.

Is Therapy Confidential?

In almost all instances, what is said in therapy stays between you and your therapist. There are HIPAA laws in place to protect your privacy, and our therapists also do so because their integrity and code of ethics require it. Our counselors understand that you have to trust them to open up, so, in the vast majority of situations, private information stays private. As with any medical professional, there are safety-related circumstances in which we would be required to contact authorities and/or release your records. Also, by using an insurance company or EAP, you are consenting that they can request or audit your records.

For more details on this, you can read the HIPAA policy here.

What Insurances Do You Accept for Individual and Adult Counseling?

We accept a variety of Floridian insurance plans for our general therapy services including Cigna, Florida Health Care Plans, Magellan, United, Optum, Tricare, Humana, and Parrish Health, as well as the Gardiner Scholarship. For those not in our payment networks, we offer self-payment options. Visit our pricing page for more information.

Can I Request a Specific Therapist?

Absolutely. A big part of finding your perfect counselor is finding someone with whom you are comfortable. For many clients—especially those with gender-specific issues or a history of interpersonal trauma—this means working with someone of a specific gender, age, faith, or clinical orientation. We want to match you to the best counselor for your needs. You can read about each counselor on their “About” pages or give us a call for a recommendation. You can also schedule a free phone consult with one or more of our counselors as a sort of interview (keep reading for more on this option).

Does Miracle City Counseling Offer Free Consultations?

We know that finding the right therapist is paramount. That’s why Miracle City Counseling offers free consultations to our clients. These introductory phone conversations can be anonymous and will help us ascertain if we’re a good fit for one another. If we believe you’d get better support from another therapist or professional, we will certainly let you know.

How Do I Prepare For My First Counseling Session?

We have an entirely digital paperwork process, and the documents must be completed 48 hours in advance. While completing these documents, you will have a preview of what the first session will cover. If you’ve never been to our office, we suggest getting familiar with the route ahead of time. This will make it easier to arrive to your appointment on time and less stressed.
